What to Expect from a Home Energy Audit

A home energy audit is a process performed by a trained technician designed to identify areas where you home could be more energy efficient and make recommendations on how to correct it. It’s not strictly a repair session. It’s more like a plan of action, designed to identify areas in your home where you can improve your overall energy performance. Depending upon the results, you can conceivably save more in monthly heating and cooling costs that you pay for the home energy audit itself. Here in Los Angeles, heating and cooling expenses are high enough to seriously consider such a move. Here’s what do expect from a home energy audit.

An energy audit should usually take an afternoon or so: about 4 to 6 hours. The technician starts by measuring the square footage of your home, as well as the composition of the walls, the presence of insulation, the type and amount of insulation and the status of areas such as the crawlspace and the attic. All of this happens while furnaces, air conditioners and similar devices are turned off and all outside doors and windows are closed.

From there, the technician moves to a thorough check of the heating and air conditioning units: running them and checking their effects on the interior atmosphere. He or she will often use an infrared camera and similar devices to spot cold spots, drafts and the like. The ducts in the home will be sealed and checked for leaks, while gas appliances such as ovens and water heaters will be examined for any leaks as well. Finally, the auditor will discuss his or her findings with you and make reservations for repairs o upgrades based on your particular needs.
